Colleague Chronicles: Zoltán Seres, Project Lead
Since when have you been working for the company, in what role and on what projects?
I started long long time ago…in ’95. That’s 28 years, uhhh. I joined first in part time while I was still attending college, so as a full time employee, I've been here since '96. For several years now, I've been working on a global music company’s project, specifically on their royalty calculation software project.
As a project lead, what does your day look like?
Well, the team here in Hungary is rather small currently, consists of only three people, including myself, so calling it project management might be an exaggeration. I coordinate the team here at Gloster-P92, the tasks are organized by the management abroad. As a project lead I don't have a lot of responsibilities at the moment and aside that I actively participate in the team as a developer.
In your opinion, what are the most important skills to be a good project lead?
If I would have to highlight one thing then I think you need to enjoy working with your colleagues, be able to communicate well with them, and possess skills that allow effective problem solving with others.
Were you a project lead before, or did you start this role with this project?
I had previous projects before, but that was a years ago. I also held similar roles there, coordinating rapid (1-3 months) and long time (>1 year) projects, but that was back in the early 2000s, so it was different from what it is now.
What advice would you give to those who want to work in this field?
I can't offer too much advice, really. The most important thing I could say is that everyone makes mistakes, so patience is needed when dealing with others. And, of course, strive to correct mistakes and be accurate. But it's important to remember that we're all human, and we work with people. The last sentence is probably not future proof.
In the 28 years you've spent at P92, what was the biggest challenge you faced?
The biggest challenge was not directly related to daily work but rather to changes in working conditions, which turned out to be a good thing. I also worked in Germany in the early 2000s and started to work remotely after I returned when fast internet was not so obvious. Later I spent time in the U.S. with this project. I was there for about 2 years each time. The challenge there was organizing work to be able to function effectively and also make the private life enjoyable for the family.
What are you most proud of in your career, what would you highlight?
I'm proud that I'm still here at Gloster- P92 and in this project, and my colleagues, environment, and bosses tolerate me. :-) It's a bit worrying but also a recognition that this project has been running for so long, and we're satisfied with our work.
What technologies do you use in the project?
We use Java and sql as we deal with huge amount of data. The Java-based framework developed within the company are what we use. It's entirely functional, user-friendly, and has been stable for years. Many thanks to my colleagues developing this well done framework. :-)
What do you like most about P92?
The coffee. :-) But to be serious, what I like most about it is the evolution. The company has changed over the years. When I started working here, it was a very small company, and I liked having a very good boss. I met him every morning, discussing daily work processes together while drinking my first coffee (we call it daily stand-up nowadays). Then, as the company grew, there was a relocations, and I like that there are more colleagues, more people, who I can meet and enjoy their company.
What has kept you at this company?
See my previous answer. :-) Actually, there has always been some change. When I got bored with things, there was always something that didn't force me to leave but brought a change to the work, helping me regain momentum.
Why would you recommend this company to others?
My salary was never late! :-) :-) As a software company, I think we are stable and have been in the market for a long time. There are interesting and challenging projects to work on, great colleagues, so I really can't say anything negative that would discourage anyone from joining if they are interested in business software development.
